Vegan MoFo 2012, Garbage Salads & the Giveaway Winner

The easiest thing to throw together is a good salad.  I think that's why it's so annoying when someone serves you iceberg with lettuce and tomato.

The best salad I've ever had was at a decidedly non-vegan restaurant called Joe's American Bar & Grill: the garbage salad.  It's been missing from the menu for years, but it was filled with a ton of great things- from mixed lettuces to beans to veggies to pasta.  I've no need to duplicate it exactly, but if there's anything it taught me, it's that lots of things taste good together.

This salad was nothing fancy, but really hit the spot with its clean-out-the-produce-drawer ingredients: romaine leaves (89 eats the spines), tomato, green pepper, 3-bean salad, and toasted sunflower seeds with a splash of chipotle olive oil that mixed nicely with the vinegar from the 3-beans.

89 actually helped herself to this one when it was waiting for me on my coffee table.  I'd inadvertently relocated the training can and when it wasn't in reach I got a little flustered.  I wasn't thinking like a blogger and yelled before I could take a picture.  But it's possible that this training thing really is working out because then I couldn't trick her into doing it again.

Keep in mind that any salad can be inspired by the original garbage- take chickpea salad, for example.  Want to clean out your fridge with something heartier?  Chop up everything crunchy- in this case: celery, carrots, onion, and jalapeño.  Throw in some salt, pepper, veganaise, dijon mustard, and relish (I was cleaning out, people! Tofu pup season isn't for months) and you've got yourself a unique lunch.

I made a sammie out of this one with lettuce and tomato.

I know what you're thinking, "That's a mighty fine sammie!"  Why, yes; yes, it is.  "It looks a little overstuffed."  Why, yes; yes, it does.  "It looks like if you take a bite of it, a tomato slice will fall out and land on 89."  Why, yes; yes, it did.

I didn't get a picture of that either.

  1. Abby,

Iceberg lettuce is never okay. Your remake of the garbage salad looks great but I would have added in lots of kale. :)

  2. Ah, MVG, but then I would have had to BUY kale- thus defeating the "clean out the fridge" purpose. PS iceberg is sometimes ok.

  3. Your salads looks just as salads should — delicious. I didn't think it was possible to ruin a salad until last weekend. Now I know better.

As for the giveaway, congrats to the winners. But I SAW the sticker stuck to your rear jean pocket. Did you stick one somewhere else as well? I thought you meant you wanted a more specific explanation than "butt." As in "pocket." Hrumph.

  4. Andrea, it's so funny you should say that. I tried to feed that particular salad to my Dad and he said, unequivocally, "I don't like your salads." HA!

You're making me work! I have to find the post with the Gone Pie sticker stuck someplace other than my rear end. It might be easier to find it on the GP facebook page, where it's made a number of appearances as a testament to its stickiness and durability.

Have you got something to say? It would be so nice to hear from you!
(I know captchas suck, but not as much as spam.)
