Yellow Bird Sauce Habanero Condiment

I really need to start blogging a series of recaps of my recent trip to Texas; what better place to ease in than with my new favorite hot sauce?  Meet Yellow Bird Sauce Habanero Condiment!

Here I was, wandering around the Wheatsville co-op...

full-disclosure, it was the other wheatsville co-op

When I came upon this:

The ingredients were unique and especially appealing.

Let's face it, that bird was too.

I was tired and full so I couldn't bring myself to taste the samples provided, but I still wanted to "Be the bird" (if you read about the bird, it turns out that I already am).  So, I bought the huge bottle in the hopes that it would be great.

An interesting factoid is that I'd already walked through an entire hot sauce shop in Austin, not found anything enticing (besides a non-vegan Maker's Mark hot sauce), and left mind-bogglingly empty-handed.  It was a travesty; I like to find new hot sauces on vacation.

So I was especially glad that Yellow Bird was part of my first Wheatsville haul!

yep, those are veeps!

I wrapped it ever so carefully, brought it home in my suitcase, and tried it on an otherwise unimpressive post-vacation meal: an Amy's samosa burrito over rice and peas.

And you know what?  That was the best Amy's burrito I've ever had.  Score!

no offense to Amy's burritos

Next I tried it in butternut squash soup, wherein it blended in seamlessly- both in color and texture.

After that I was just squirting it on everything.  Potatoes and onions:

Brussels sprouts...

Corn...

It's no wonder it only took me 3 days to consume a significant portion of the bottle; I obviously need to simma.

I highly recommend that you go get some, but note: unlike most hot sauces, Yellow Bird has to be refrigerated after opening.

Be the bird.

  1. Fun post, but you left out just how firey hot this sauce is?

    1. You're right! I'm have a very high tolerance for heat, so I'm an awful judge. I confidently say it was a perfect medium heat, but for others that might mean HOT. Please do note that it's a smoothly-textured, flavorful heat- not hot for the sake of being hot.

  3. Holy moly, Yellow Bird Habanero Sauce with Amy's burritos?! (I like her GF ones) That looks tasty, btw I love the Earth Balance Cheddar Kettle Chips tastier than the Sour Cream ones.

    1. I keep meaning to buy the cheddar and sour cream ones at the same time so I can eat them together; I was a big fan of the cheddar sour cream ridgies back in the day!

  4. I love the addition of tangerines in the hot sauce. Makes me want to run right out and grab a bottle.

    1. That was particularly one of the ingredients that made it so appealing to me!

  5. Oh, I also have a high tolerance for heat! I rarely find a decent habanero sauce, because apparently the trend is to just make something bloody hot, not delicious. I'm debating whether to order a couple of bottles or try to make this myself based off their ingredients list. My habanero plants are doing well, so I guess it will depend on if I have the patience to wait for my peppers to come in.

    1. I'm not growing habs this year, because last year there was an avalanche of them and no one in my immediate vicinity likes anything hot. I love flavorful hot sauces; you should also give Secret Aardvark a whirl.

  6. To be honest, I'd just buy it for the cute label. The fact that it turned out to be delicious would be an all round bonus! Also, brussel sprouts for the win!

  7. What?! You found those Veeps at Wheatsville? I couldn't... though I went to the one in the picture, not the one on Lamar. Glad you enjoyed your trip!

    1. Yes, the Veeps were from Lamar; I probably didn't look in Guadalupe because I already had them. Note for next year: they're in the fridge! I can't wait to blog everything once I have the time; I hope I don't forget anything!

  9. I vote for the Brussels sprouts - yum! BUT, I seem to be getting wussier and wussier about hot food with every year that goes by. I don't know if the food is getting hotter, or if I just can't handle it any more. :-/

  10. GREAT ARTICLE! To you who LOVE hot n spicy sauces but haven't seen the YELLOWBIRD fly into your local market ... Just want you to know WHOLE FOODS in AUSTIN, is supposed to be carrying this bottled delicious heat... Soooo GO TO YOUR LOCAL WHOLE FOODS CUSTOMER SERVICE DESK and put in a request.... Just sayin'... They aim to please. I'm a loyal fan and an occasional keep-em-on-their-toes customer! Otherwise, YELLOWBIRD seems to have flown to the great AMAZON for orders and distribution. Hope ya'all find your sauce and can give someone who loves the heat the bird---YELLOWBIRD! ( and no, I don't work for either company, but when someone does something right... They need to know and be supported in their endeavors! ) t' miller TX
